Some people think that art is an essential subject for children at school while others think it is a waste of time. Discuss both sides and give your opinion.

The debate over whether art should be a required subject in schools is ongoing. While some view art as a vital educational component, others see it as a diversion from more essential subjects. This essay will discuss both perspectives before concluding with my personal viewpoint.

Proponents of art education argue that art is crucial for developing creativity and emotional intelligence in children. They believe that art enriches students’ lives and fosters a broad spectrum of skills from critical thinking to empathy. Art also offers a platform for self-expression and can aid in the emotional and psychological development of children. Furthermore, being exposed to art helps cultivate an appreciation for cultural diversity and historical heritage, enhancing a student’s overall education.

Conversely, opponents claim that the educational focus should be on subjects like science, math, and technology, which are perceived to be more directly linked to employability and economic success in a tech-driven world. They argue that educational resources are finite and prioritizing art could detract from investing in these critical subjects, potentially disadvantaging students in their future careers.

Despite these arguments, I support the inclusion of art in the curriculum. The skills learned through art, such as innovative thinking and problem-solving, are invaluable and increasingly sought after in many professional fields. Moreover, integrating art with academic subjects can lead to a more engaging and comprehensive education, preparing students to meet the challenges of the future with a balanced perspective.

In conclusion, while STEM subjects are undoubtedly important, the benefits of art education justify its presence in the curriculum. Art plays a crucial role not only in developing a well-rounded intellect but also in nurturing a balanced human being.
